Door County’s tourism industry is collecting new and gently used coats, scarves, hats, mittens and other warm clothing items starting today as part of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism’s “Big Bundle Up” donation campaign. The campaign is a statewide collection program that runs from November 17, 2016 to January 2, 2017. All items donated locally will stay in Door County and be distributed throughout the county.

This is the sixth year of the program. Last winter a total of 22,510 items were donated to charities throughout Wisconsin. Since 2011, the campaign has totaled more than 71,800 donated items. In Door County, nearly 3,000 items have been donated.

Eight different tourism organizations in Door County have committed to participate in this year’s “Big Bundle Up” cold weather clothing drive. Those organizations include the Door County Visitor Bureau, Baileys Harbor Community Association, Carlsville Business Association, Egg Harbor Business Association, Fish Creek Civic Association, Jacksonport Information Center, Sister Bay Advancement Association, and the Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center.

A container will be located at participating locations for donors to drop off new or gently used clothing items. When the drive concludes in January, items will be distributed back to Door County residents through local charity partners.

Jen Rogers, communication and PR manager for the Door County Visitor Bureau, is helping organize this year’s effort in Door County and says the DCVB is excited to be part of the campaign again. “We are excited to help with this project, and give back to the community,” Rogers said. “Previously, I worked with children and I know winter gear gets lost and sometimes these items don’t get replaced,” she said. “This is a great campaign that will keep not only local children warm, but also adults.”
