Kim has not only brought in a wonderful array of gifts and books for students and visitors from which to choose a memento (or five!) of their Clearing visit, but she has also managed to put the merchandise up on the website (a first!) for all to purchase these special gifts. Often these are locally made - like the warm mittens, jewelry, and forged metal items, so she is also promoting Door County artists. You would never have known it was the week before tens of thousands of people descended on Sister Bay for Fall Fest - Jacki had all the time in the world for us! And later that week, I saw her not once but twice out and about, installing the Fall Fest banner at the top of the hill and talking to some other visitors on the street, no doubt enriching their stay in Sister Bay. Kim Jenson from Mojo Restaurant Group
The first time I came to Door Co. in February 2004, my now-husband proposed. Our first meal to celebrate was at Village Cafe. Kim heard we were celebrating & provided our meal gratis (including my favorite Spicy Crab & Cream Cheese Omelet). We were wed in October of that year & hosted our reception in the charmingly decorated Village Cafe but with the more elegant food of her other restaurant, Villagios. The following year, after we had welcomed our first child, Kim & Todd actually invited us to their home to try a new pasta recipe. That pasta recipe survived the move to a new location almost two decades later, & it is still on the menu named Villasenor. Finally, as our child grew up & celebrating summer birthdays in Door Co. became a tradition, so did Pink Bakery. In fact, all four of our children have decorated Christmas & Valentines cookies with Kim in the Pink Bakery. Since we were engaged Valentines weekend, you could really say everything has come full circle. We’re so grateful to have had Kim to celebrate so many moments of our lives together.  Nominated by Karen V

Lily Robbins from Thorp House Inn & Cottages
Lily came to Thorp House Inn from Chicago in the spring of this year to work for just the high season. She arrived during a tumultuous time at the inn, where I was having staffing issues. She immediately jumped in and began learning all aspects of innkeeping quickly. By the summer she was serving and connecting with guests, and performing outstanding housekeeping duties. She literally saved our high season. She loved innkeeping so much she decided to stay on full time and year-round. Perhaps most importantly is that Lily is a young married mother of two beautiful girls, so she is also juggling being a wife and parent with her full time role at Thorp House Inn. She is my hero.  Nominated by Matt R

She puts everyone's needs at the top of her list and sometimes needs reminders to take care of herself first. She received the recognition she has deserved by becoming the Housekeeping Supervisor here at Westwood this spring! We receive so many reviews that mention how clean our resort is and that is due to her diligence and hard work here. I’ve had so many great conversations with this lady and she grew up here in Sturgeon Bay And just recently shaved her head for a cure for cancer for Doorcan. I can’t imagine others that would give the same sacrifice in order to raise over $10,000 herself to donate for a cure for cancer. I sure hope that you will consider her for this recipient of this prestigious award.  Nominated by Deanna N

Joann Scaturo from Scaturo's Restaurant & Bakery
"Charming" doesn't even cover what Joanne is to the community. She's welcoming to all customers, whether local or just visiting... bass tournament participants and displaced Coast Guard servicepeople recieve the warmest of breakfasts, she keeps the regulars on their toes with a quick wit, treats hired repair & tradespeople to meals, sends the elderly out the door with a staff member to carry their bakery bags, is always one to support community non-profit organizations - especially with their famous cookie platters, organizes catering to local businesses as big as the hospital (which I currently work for), not to mention supporting her husband in his role of public restaurant mascot. While she has the customers literally & figuratively "eating out of the palm of her hand," employees are faithful to her for decades AND generations, as children of her previous employees work for her (as my children and I have, let alone at least three other families of my knowledge); we all know the challenge of taking teens under wing and teaching them what responsibility and dedication is, but she does it with affectionate teasing and the generous rewarding of hard work, all the while training the next generation in the restaurant business. I can honestly say as a previous employee, once you work there, you are "family" for life. How can you not honor a woman who is keeping the cozy mom & pop vibe strong in a busy food emporium for the past 20+ years?  Nominated by Skye Reynolds

The best in the business!!! Hardest worker, beautiful hostess, giant heart, generous beyond belief!!! If you’re lucky enough to know her, you know this.  Nominated by Kelly M

I'm a Sturgeon Bay native and have been both a past employee & current customer of Scaturo's; Joanne is a stellar human being with a generous nature, despite being the proprietor of a VERY busy Door County restaurant. I think the fact Scaturo's stayed open to serve the public through the recent pandemic with to-go meals & family deals to help the community when we were on our financial knees is just a small example of her giving attributes ... plus, evolving an established business to accommodate the increased need (when most would sit back & say if it isn't broke - don't fix it), really shows how both her & her husband are always ready to meet the challenges of serving the area & its influx of guests... if Sturgeon Bay had a crown to hand out to the longest-standing, restaurant-wielding, maternal-figure, we'd lay one posthumously at Mrs. Birmingham's tombstone and then hand one to Joanne.  Nominated by Brooke B

Joanne is the hidden treasure that keeps Scaturo’s magic happening. She is always working to keep the flow going and to make the customer experience seamless and perfect. Joanne is also one of the most GENEROUS and THOUGHTFUL woman, business owner, community member and friend you will ever meet. She never wants accolades or attention. She just gives and gives and gives. I am honored to call her friend. I am thrilled to nominate Joanne Scaturo for Door County’s Hospitality Hero! This woman deserves this title.  Nominated by Claudia S

There are so many reasons she is deserving of this recognition but the one that stands out the most is her generosity towards our community. From the very start of their business Joanne has given to the community. Be it supporting the numerous not for profit organizations in their fund raising efforts , giving those who have fallen on hard times a helping hand, or she just plain knows how to put a smile back on a face and dry up tears through the magic of cookies, cakes and pies. No one goes hungry when Joanne us around!  Nominated by Carol D

Very hard worker. Best cookie maker in the USA.  Nominated by Cassidy M

When faced with my husband’s death the last thing I could think about was how to feed hundreds of people. Without hesitation Joanne stepped in and handled everything seamlessly. I will forever be grateful for her generosity and support.  Nominated by Julie S

Joanne always has a smile to welcome all into the restaurant. Always making sure the kids have a blast every time they are there with the phenomenal chocolate chip pancakes and can't forget about the cookies! She deserves ALL the credit!  Nominated by Ivy B

It's her own little ice breaker for the new hires to feel comfortable. We are from Chicago and boy does Susan love her Packers. She will let you know it too especially if someone is donning another teams jersey outside of Wisconsin. It's all in a fun and what a great way to start your day. Congratulations to Kim Steger, from The Clearing Folk School!

Congratulations to Kim Steger, from The Clearing Folk School!

Paula Kosin's nomination said, "Kim is a welcoming presence for The Clearing, whether in person or on the phone. She is helpful and knowledgeable when answering questions about the Jens Jensen displays in the Visitors Center, the multitude of classes, and the weekend docent-led tours of the property. The bookstore is beautifully merchandised and decorated (on cool days, the stone fireplace helps!). Family camping trips in Peninsula State Park as a girl introduced her to the Door, and she jumped at the chance for herself and her family to move here permanently. Kim is clearly a valued Hospitality Hero for our fine county!"
