Published

When in Door County, you won’t want to miss these unique food finds. From sweet treats to savory bites, our top 10 Door County foods to try will get your grocery list started.

1. Pecan Rolls at Grandma’s Swedish Bakery

Start your day with a half-pound pecan roll from Grandma’s Swedish Bakery at Rowley’s Bay Resort. Many call it the best pecan roll around, and after 45 years in business, that’s not hard to believe. Recipes are handed down through each generation, providing an array of authentic Swedish delights for customers to enjoy today.

2. Cherry Stuffed French Toast at White Gull Inn

A customer favorite at the White Gull Inn is the Door County Cherry Stuffed French Toast. Two slices of egg bread are stuffed with cream cheese and local cherries and then topped with maple syrup for a deliciously decadent breakfast.

3. Corsica Bread at Door County Bakery

The 6-pound Corsica Loaf has become a main attraction to the Door County Bakery, and for good reason. This one-of-a-kind loaf uses a unique baking method to infuse the bread with olive oil and sesame seeds. Add slices to a salad, sandwich, or bread bowl for a distinct flavor addition.

4.
Belgian Pie at Kermis Celebrations

No "best of" Door County food list would be complete without this traditional Belgian sweet dessert! The classic pies feature a sweet pastry crust with a variety of sweet toppings such as apple, prune, cherry, and sweet cheese. Belgian pies were originally created to help celebrate Kermis, a traditional harvest event that early permanent settlers brought with them to Door County. Kermis celebrations are typically held in late summer/early fall, so keep your ear to the ground for an opportunity to try this traditional dessert.

5. Cinnamon Raisin Bread at Scaturo’s

The bakery at Scaturo’s is dangerous to browse on an empty stomach—featuring a long list of bread, sweets, and plenty of specialty items, it’s hard to choose one thing. But if you must, the cinnamon raisin bread stands out as a mouth-watering loaf drizzled with icing and chock-full of spiced raisins and lots of cinnamon.

6. White Fish Fry at Harbor Fish Market & Grille

Wisconsin is known for Friday Fish Fry, and Door County is no different. However, there is one twist: fresh-caught whitefish from Lake Michigan is the go-to instead of walleye or perch. Whether it is Friday or not, you can dine on fresh whitefish at the shoreline of Bailey’s Harbor or inside the historic 120-year old building that now houses Harbor Fish Market & Grille.

7. Cherry Pie at Pink Bakery

Made-from-scratch cherry pies are a Door County must-have. The county is a top producer of tart Montmorency cherries, which become charmingly sweet when baked into a pie. But the cherry pies at Pink Bakery are just the proverbial “cherry on top:” the bakery also offers a large selection of cookies, cupcakes, custom cakes, and more.

8. Fish Boil at the Viking Grill

Try whitefish a new (yet very old) way with the traditional fish boil. A unique experience in itself, the fish boil at the Viking Grill starts with preparation of a large pot brought to boil over a large fire. Add the fish and vegetables to begin to create an easy and tasty dinner that became popular back when the villages of the peninsula were primarily lumberjacks and fishermen.

9. Organic Local Meat and Produce at Waseda Farms

Waseda Farms humanely raise black angus beef, heritage berkshire pork, and chickens on its Baileys Harbor land. Stop into the farm market and store to see items from over 150 local artisans, producers, and farmers. From cheese to meat to produce, you can eat local no matter what you’re craving.

10. Cherry Margarita

A summer vacation on the shoreline calls for a margarita, but instead of the traditional lime variety, the Door County version is a cherry margarita. These lovely cherry-red margaritas match the gorgeous sunsets over our bays and harbors. Order a glass and enjoy the perfect view from a variety of spots across the peninsula.
